A picture is worth a thousand words. So cliche, I know. But no matter how many guidebooks or online forums you read when booking a trip, getting a visual always makes the process a little smoother, and the decision, A LOT easier.
Enter Instagram. Not only is it a great way to receive recommendations or create ideas, it gives you a fresh perspective on a destination from a guest’s point of view. This is how to use Instagram to help plan your next trip:
Use “places” to see real pictures of hotels.
Before booking a room, I ALWAYS search the hotel on Instagram. In fact, for my latest trip, that is how I made the final decision. Hotels pay big $$$ for professional photographers to make their rooms appear double the size, restaurants seem cozier, and lobbies look sleeker. These are the photos you’ll see on their social media, website, and booking sites. Want a more realistic peek? Search the hotel name in the “places” tab, and you’ll see every picture tagged with that location by guests.
Search by Location.
Type in a city, area, or even a specific landmark to see tagged photos from those locations. I find this super helpful when trying to figure out what neighborhood I should be staying in what I can expect from a certain venue, or just when I’m curious to see what is available.
Trying to decide on a restaurant? Look it up.
Unsure on a menu or how “dressed up” you need to be for a dinner? Find the restaurant on Instagram to get an idea on ambiance, menu, and overall expectations. Still want to see more? Look through tagged photos to see “in the moment” shots.
Follow the City/Destination.
This is my secret sauce. When my husband and I decide on a destination, I search and find their “official” handle. They usually post pictures of various restaurants, hotels and landmarks, so I can get an idea (and recommendations) to add to my itinerary!
Can’t find the information online? Send a Direct Message.
If their website is nonexistent, hours are not clear, or if you are visiting another country that you cannot call: send them a direct message to get more information. It is becoming more and more customary in the hospitality industry to respond to customer’s requests on social media.
Ask for Recommendations!
Last, but not least, use your own profile (follow me here) to receive recommendations from friends and family! Before a trip, I usually post a slide on my InstaStory asking for ideas for certain destinations. Not your thing? Post a picture and caption it with your upcoming travel plans. You’ll be amazed with how many people respond!
