No, Mom, this is not an announcement of any sorts. You’re probably thinking “What experience does she have traveling with children?’ My honest answer: None. A few of my readers have expressed frustrations with airlines and their policies varying from one to another. Traveling with children is no easy feat, but I had no idea how difficult it is to get a clear answer from an airline.
During my research, I was surprised how many changes have been made in the last six months. As a traveler, your frustrations are being heard. Most airlines are bringing back priority boarding for families, as well as a few other “perks.”
*little rant* It annoys me that one airline has been deemed “the family airline.” When, in reality, other airlines allow children to board FIRST and allow all baggage for children to travel FOR FREE.
With that, I’ve done you a favor and compiled a list of protocols and polices of the major U.S. airlines:
** If I did not include an airline that you typically travel, let me know and I’d be happy to add it to the list.
Remember:
Your child has to be UNDER the age of two WHEN flying. Even if you book the ticket while he/she is still under two, he/she cannot be two or older when flying.
Ask about bassinets. Most long-haul flight come equipped with bassinets, however, call the airline and confirm. They prefer to know in advance if a baby is flying and will be more capable of assisting you and your needs on travel day.
Do you have any recommendations/tips for traveling with children?
