If you follow along on my other social media platforms, you might have noticed that I recently partook in a childhood dream: taking the train. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve taken my fair share of trains in Europe (even purchasing a EuroRail Global Pass one summer) and the train throughout the suburbs in Chicago, but I’ve always dreamed of taking a sleeper train out west. And let me tell you, I had THE TIME of my life.
Although, technically our trip was not overnight (it was nine hours) AND you could argue that Nebraska “isn’t even the West,” I do feel like there’s another check mark on my bucket list. With one train ride under my belt, I already have my eyes set on this route.
Stepping on the train, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Before there was enough time to panic, our attendant (yes, you have an attendant) was putting our luggage on the rack, showing us to our room, and taking our reservations for dinner.
Here’s what you need to know about Traveling with Amtrak:
It is almost as Fast as Driving.
Living in Chicago, we have zero need for a car. When heading back to Omaha, we find ourselves renting a car or paying entirely too much for a 45 minute flight. I was amazed to find that taking the train was only 30 minutes longer than driving. Being able to move around, have access to a bathroom, and being able to work on my laptop — it was a no brainer.
Wanting to take a trip to Chicago? You’ll save on gas, parking in the city (up to $65 dollars a night), and the station is in the heart of the city.
It’s Affordable.
Standard tickets start around $60 each way ($120 RT) which is MUCH cheaper than flying. While you do not have a private room, you do have access to the viewing car with full size tables and outlets. We were upgraded to a Private Sleeper Car for 2, these start at around $180 for the room , each way.
Room to Move about.
Legs getting cramped? Back stiff? Not a worry, there is so much to explore. Take a look around. Better yet, head to the viewing car for large windows and comfy seating to enjoy the scenery.
Full-Service Dining and Bars.
Not doing our research, we packed a bag full of food for the trip. We quickly found out that meals are included with sleeper cars, candy is free, and there are endless snack options in the viewing car. The dining car was straight out of a movie. Making reservations as soon as we boarded, we found ourselves sitting at a table with white tablecloths, eating steak with a glass of wine.
Amazing Service.
Amtrak had THE NICEST people. It wasn’t just a few, it was everyone. From our attendant showing us the ropes, to the hilarious guy at the viewing car bar, to our dinner service, everyone was on the top of their game.
Sleeper Cars.
Overnight accommodations are available on the majority of long-haul routes. The sleeper cars range in size for up to four adults. We chose the most basic overnight, which had two oversized seats that transitioned into bunk beds. Rooms are equipped with outlets, a table, storage for bags and coats, as well black out curtains.
Unexpected Amenities.
While I expected comfy chairs and work tables, there were so many amenities that surprised me. From clean bathrooms (with showers), full meal service, attendants, snack service, viewing cars, I was constantly busy exploring new parts of the train.
Less Hassle.
Standing in long lines and endless waiting are two things that drive me insane in airports. We showed up to Amtrak about 30 minutes before our train departed, almost immediately boarded, and our had our credentials checked while were in our seats.
Almost Unlimited Baggage Policy.
Amtrak’s baggage policy is INSANE. Each passenger is allowed 2 carry-on size bags, as well as 2 personal items, plus 4 checked bags.
An Authentic Experience.
Amtrak is an icon in transportation. It may no longer be THE means for transportation, but it one of the most enjoyable I’ve had. The countryside of America is fascinating and often overlooked in age of air travel. The experience is an adventure in itself. Next time you’re heading west (or anywhere really), be sure to check out what Amtrak has to offer.
