Just finished my Tuesday night Soul-Cycle, turned on the World Series (Go Cubbies!) and suddenly had the urge to kick out a few new posts for the blog.
One of the biggest travel “mistakes” I see people making is NOT joining the loyalty program. Whether it’s a rental company, a hotel, or an airline, there are so many perks to enjoy, and the best part: THEY ARE ALL FREE. Whether I am spending a week at a hotel or just one night, I always sign up for their program. In fact, there is usually a perk or two that you can start using on the spot (win-win).
I also recommend choosing a brand or two and STICKING TO THEM. If you use every airline or every hotel chain, it will take longer to gain status with any particular program. I always look at things long turn. Spending $10-15 more on a plane ticket/hotel room with a certain airline/hotel will pay off in the long run with free bag check, upgrades, lounge access, etc.
Here’s a few of the many benefits you can enjoy**:
Freebies.
Whether it’s free breakfast, an exclusive happy hour, or a bottle of pink champagne (seriously, love you Royal Hawaiian), hotels are always giving out freebies to their loyal customers, why wouldn’t you want to be one?
Points.
I would say that 85% of our hotel rooms are paid with points. That means our lodging is free on nearly EVERY trip we take. I know many people are leery about points and “blackout dates.” To be honest, I’ve never head a single problem. More brands are becoming transparent with their point system, meaning more free nights/flights for you.
Free Wifi.
This is ALMOST always a perk that you can start using day one. Saving $12.95 a night on wifi, means one more drink at happy hour.
Upgrades.
Sadly the days of being upgraded “just because” are coming to an end. Where do those upgrades go? The loyalty members. This doesn’t happen right away, but once you start to hit higher status, you’ll be surprised with how often upgrades happen.
Brand Ambassadors.
Flight cancelled? Book the wrong hotel? (<– done this a few times) Special Occassion? Let these experts work their magic. It’s a comforting to know that you have someone working behind the scenes in those panic moments.
Early Check-In/Late Check-Out
Nothing better than an early check-in after a 6am flight. Nothing.
Lounge Access.
Whether an airline or hotel lounge, it’s always nice to snack on food and sip on drinks that are on the house. Makes the whole travel process a little more luxurious 🙂
Here are my favorites loyalty programs:
SPG // United Mileageplus // Avis Preferred
What is your favorite loyalty program?
**Might require status before you can start enjoying, don’t worry, they add up faster than you think 🙂
