I’ll be the first one to admit, I definitely do not take full advantage of what Chicago’s theater scene has to offer. But as I stated, I am resolved to mix things up this year, and I am excited to have a few shows on my calendar for 2017. When people think Chicago theater, they might Broadway productions (which are always a great choice), but Chicago has so many smaller productions that are so incredibly good.
Here’s what is on my radar for 2017:
Hamilton If you know anything about me, you know that I am obsessed with this production. For good reason, of course. I’ve been able to see this production in both NYC (Lin Manuel Miranda) and Chicago (Miguel Cervantes), and man, “did they blow us all away.” I know tickets to this show are quite a splurge, but this is a production you’ll be talking about for ages. Another perk: It is opening this year in both San Francisco, Los Angeles & London.
iO Theater: The Improvised Shakespeare Company This show has become a favorite of mine, especially when guests come to visit. Tickets are just $16 and trust me, you’ll be laughing the entire. Shows are made up on the spot, done in Shakespearen language, and no two are the same. In fact, titles for the play are thrown about my the audience as soon as the production begins.
Aladdin I AM SO EXCITED. I have never seen Aladdin, but my little sister gave it a raving review. The show starts in April in Chicago and the tickets are already on sale AND for a great price.
Les Miserables Tickets are not yet on sale, but Les Miserables is coming back to Chicago this winter. I am really hoping to snag a ticket for the performance!
Ready to mix it up? These are shows I am keeping in my back pocket:
Second City
An American in Paris (runs July & August)
And as always, I love catching a performance or two during the Chicago Summer Music Series in Millenium Park. The shows are free and held every Monday & Thursday evening. You can most definitely find me there with a glass of wine in hand and full charcuterie board.
