Planning a summer vacation looks a little different this year. We are usually looking for a long getaway somewhere in Europe or exploring a “new to us” area in the United States. However, this summer our planning methods have changed and we are looking at travel differently. Drive-able locations, remote accommodations or innovative ways to spruce up a normal weekend are on our radar.
Here are five “trips” (or experiences) that we are looking to book this summer:
Rent a Cabin for a long weekend.
No matter what state you live in, there is most likely an opportunity to book a remote cabin for a few days. We are looking forward to spending some time outside the city, next to a fire pit …. with a glass of wine.
In order to be aware of our surroundings, we are going to be doing all our grocery shopping ahead of time, which will allow for some fun meal planning. We intend on spending our days hiking and enjoying nature (and taking full advantage of the quiet outdoors).
Airbnb is always my go-to place for rentals, but I also have luck with VRBO or even local short-term rental companies.
Conde Nast recently shared this list of fun rentals (we were able to snag one of the locations!), you can also check out one of my all time favorite Airbnb rentals in Iceland.
Spruce up the weekend with a Michelin Dinner on the Patio.
Alinea .. at home?? Crazy times we’re in. One of the best things to come out of the last few months are the amazing take home dining options being offered by some of the greatest names in the food industry (at much lower prices than the real experience).
If there’s a reservation you’ve been dying to snag, most likely there’s a take home / delivery option being delivered.
Restaurants in Chicago: Alinea // Smyth // Oriole // NEXT // Kyoten
Not a lot of restaurant opportunities in your area? No worries. My husband and I have tested out a few kits and think it’s a great way to add some variety. Check out this Mozzarella Making Class or Schedule a Virtual Wine Tasting.
Enjoy the stars with a GLAMping experience.
A glamping experience has been on my bucket list for years. What better time than now? In doing my research, many “resorts” are adding to their food options (partnering with famous chefs), expanding their excursions, and making the stay more luxurious than ever all while allowing social distance.
While I have not found an option near Chicago that I love, here are a few that have been on my radar:
Watch a classic at a Drive-In Theater.
I grew up going to drive-in theaters with my family. Absolutely love them. I am excited to see that they are making a come back during this time, and I hope they are here to stay!
From what I’ve read, Bucketlisters is looking to open a drive in theater IN Chicago. If it happens, you’ll be seeing me there.
A day trip to a state or national park for a hike
Although I’ve lived in Chicago for over five years, I have yet to make a day trip to one of the many State Parks around Chicago. If you’re like me, this is a perfect time to do some research and find a new hike / trail near you.
Starved Rock // Matthiessen State Park // Channahon State Park
If you aren’t big into hiking, no problem. You can always drive through the park and enjoy the views from the comfort of your car. Note: Be sure to check the park’s website before leaving your house. Many have updated hours or COVID specific rules that need to be followed.
